“This is Moi J’Connais Records’ first 10″ release. We’ve often listened to Chapter while driving and always wondered when and how Alex and Thierry had come up with this music: a duo that plays every instrument, a heavenly voice, hypnotic arpeggios… We asked them to come to our garden to compose and record a few songs in our yurt, which they transformed into a little sanctuary of shamanic folk for three days – a rougher setting than they are used to, we believe. Thus were created the six tracks that make up this 10″ White Heron Blues, this stuffed bird that watched over them during their stay. The only trouble with these tunes that we’re so fascinated with is that they don’t really help to understand where this soothing darkness comes from, which makes us want to close our eyes and hope to see them someday for real.”

Hailing from the likes of England, Belgium and Switzerland, Chapter are as much an amalgamation of sundry musical genres as they are a melting-pot of cultural identities. The band consists of Thierry van Osselt, songwriter and sound engineer, and Alexander Craker, singer and songwriter. Together they build craftworks of warm acoustic guitars, slow-yet-dynamic beats and gloomy folk melodies.
On this new record, titled “Two (The Biographer )”, Chapter seem to have perfected their art, creating a smooth vein of folkrock with tunes that unfold their magic even after scores of listens.

Chapter’s story evokes many tales: the never-ending comeback of folk music, the allure of craftsmanship, the conquering of age-old art forms. Above all though, it tells the tale of two loners, Alexander Craker and Thierry van Osselt, two songwriters with sensitive heartstrings, learning the virtues of folk sobriety. Released in 2004, “Chapter – One (Prologue)” displays a rare osmosis of tender folk and jagged blues, somewhere between Pinback, Tom Waits and Red House Painters. This is a rare record with the sheen of an old book of spells.
